The Raiders of Galath's Roost
by Skip Williams

Prologue
Of all the dales, Mistledale has long been regarded as the most secure, tranquil, and bountiful. Most dalesfolk will tell you (without envy or rancor) that Mistdale seems to have had less than its fair share of troubles over the last century. That might be at an end.
Mistledale is surrounded on three sides by the forest of Cormanthor, and the forest is increasingly becoming a frontier where the interests of humans, elves and drow clash. Drow raids on the peaceful villages and farms of Mistledale have become downright commonplace of late. especialy on moonless or overcast nights. Mistledale is now at war - not an intense or dramatic war, to be sure, but a war nonetheless.
The peaceful land of Mistledale has been greatly troubled of late by raiding drow who strike on moonless nights and then retreat under cover of darkness. Chasing marauding drow over the fields and hedgerows of Mistledale has proved futile so far, but a new development has caught adventurer's notice. Rumor has it that the drow are using the abandoned keep of Galath's Roost, a ruin a few leagues east of Glen, as a base for their raids.
Troops sent to investigate the site have found a few monsters but no signs of habitation. Nevertheless, raids in the north east end of the dale have been heavy, and a company of militia was recently sent to watch the keep through the night was completely wiped out, the soldiers gone without a trace.
Some dales folk are not so sure the drow are to blame for the strange doings at Galath's Roost. Until now, drow raids only on moonless nights but also always within half a night's march of the forest. These new raids seem to occur more often, and on moonlit nights most of all. Furthermore, at least some of the raiders seem to be mounted.
Galath's Roost has long been rumored to be haunted by ghosts of long-dead bandits. Perhaps the ghosts of Galath's band have awakened to raid again. In any case, a great treasure is reputed to lie hidden in or below Galath's Roost, and that is enough to get anyone's attention.

The Creed has send me to deal with this incident and deal with the drow, or anything else that comes by. This event doesn't seems related with my wife and Child gruesome fate... but a job is a job, and I need to help the Creed if their are to help me find their murderer. When I arrive to Mistledale, first thing is to find an Inn... and some whiskey, with ice.

Chapter I - The Way to Galath's Roost

Ander arrives to Mistledale by sunset. Townsfolk are getting ready for supper and of any help. The best place to get information - and booze - would be the Pointy-Muse Inn, placed by the town's well. Inside, Ander's eyes are caught by the bartender, an beautiful elf that could be the inspiration for the Inn's name.

The Elf wears an dark red dress, and has an Imperial butterfly tattooed on her left shoulder. Her skin is pale and her hair is light yellow, just like a pure-blood elf. However, she considerable higher than a normal elf, about the average human stature. The Inn is empty, and the only two people on sight are Ander and the Bartender. Ander asks for his long-waited drink - whiskey with ice. [Per(A)d2] He notices that the bartender creates Ice by freezing the water with a spell. She also does the same to the drink to decrease it's temperature. She delivers the cup to Ander, bowing over the balcony - revealing her bosom - and interrogating her new costumer with her sweet and warm voise: " You are new in town. Have to come to deal with the raids, or after the rumoured treasure?" [Wll(A)d8] As a celestial, Ander tries to resist temptation and lust by focusing on his drink. He bottoms-up causing him to choke on the drink. "Oh boy..." - says the bartender with a joking smile - "It seems that you can't hold your drink." Ander becomes embarrassed by such a behaviour in from of such beautiful girl (-2Wll).

Chapter I, Verse 2

Post by Ryugin Omega on Thu Nov 15, 2018 4:08 pm

Ander passes the empty glass to the bartender. "My name is Minah."  - She answers. [Wll(A)d13] He tries to focus on the reason that brought him there, but without success. He continues to fell embarrassed and uneasy near Minah. She arrives with new glass of whiskey within her hand. Ander takes this opportunity to inquire her about any rumours spread across town. As tavernkeeper, Minah is up-to-date on town rumours. "About the raids?" - Minah frowns - "They seem to attack only at night, at least that's what I heard. Many of the townsfolk strongly believe they are based at some old ruins close by. Galath's Tower was the name, I think. Now all that is left is the underground part of the fort." Minah comes around the balcony and sits besides Ander. The cold of the night enters through the door and windows of the empty Inn.
Ander takes a slip of his second glass of whiskey. [Con(A)+3d16] This specific whiskey seems a bit stronger than the one Ander is used to. His mind and vision start to become foggy (-1Int/Per).
"Maybe you are after Galath's tresure." - She continues - "Still, let it be raids or the treasure, all the ways lead to Galath's Ruins. But be careful! Guards are died at the hands of the raiders, and many of the adventurers that search for the treasure don't return." - She pauses for a moment before she leaves an sarcastic smile. - " Like I said, both ways lead to ruin." [Per(A)d15] Maybe is the alcohol, but something about Minah seemed off. Still, Ander couldn't say for sure.
As new costumers start to enter the Inn, Minah leaves back to her working spot.

After the long journey to Mistledale, some whiskey and a good chat, it is time to rest. Ander plans on depart to Galath's Tower on next day, by sun raise. He will say his farewells to Minah and go for one of the rooms in the Inn. In his room, before he falls asleep, Ander will check and prepare his equipment for the journey ahead.

Chapter I, Verse 3

Post by Ryugin Omega on Fri Nov 16, 2018 3:16 pm

From his pocket, Ander leaves 3 silver coins for both the drink and accommodation for the night over the balcony. With that he is left with the rest of his payment from the last bounty - 8 silver and 21 cooper coins. "You can choose any room on the left." says Minah while she fills 2 mugs of bear. More and more people are still entering on the Inn. [Per(A)d14] Most of the costumers seems to be male, all of them farmhands, probably. Humans and Dwarfs share the same table and beer. No other humanoid race is present. Ander says his goodbyes and leaves quietly to his room upstairs.
The bedroom looks old and in need of heavy cleaning. The bed's white sheets contrast heavily with the dark room. At least the  bed seems comfortable enough. Sited in the bed, he prepares his blade and handgun. [Dex(A)d17] While handling his [Ad2] C2-Pad, Ander looses his grip for a slightly second and drops it on the wooden floor. A cracking sound echoes through the room as the machine hits the ground. Worried, Ander pick it up to find it damaged and unusable. With the last whiskey weighting on his senses, he calls it a day and tries to sleep.
As the sun rises from the horizon, so do its light breaks trough the room's window, and with them, Ander comes to it's senses. [Con(A)+8d17] Ander's whiskey felt him with a small headache (-1Int/Per). As planed, he gathers his equipment and sets course for Galath's ruined tower. If the rumours are true, there he will find the culprits of the nocturnal raids. There is no living soul in the inn downstairs. [Per(A)+2d12] There is no smell of alcohol which normally accompanies the mornings of the Inns in the big cities. No sign of fighting or broken glass. It seems the costumers left earlier last night. It is obvious that the population is worried about late night bandits and will avoid travel home late. Ander departs without encountering a single soul. Maybe that leaves the goodbyes easier.
The way to the ruins filled with small vegetation and a occasional oaktree. Mainly plains, it is possible to observe the farmland in the horizon, to the west. Ander travel though a small dirt road in direction to a small hill in the north, where Galath's Ruins are located. But the area around the ruined tower is not with out peril. From a giant hole by the side of the road a dog-size ant emerges. [Per(A)-2d16] The Giant-Ant turn its mandibles to Ander while its antennae waver though the air above her head.

Detective Ander Bright

Post by Ryugin Omega on Sun Nov 18, 2018 9:13 pm

Used to work with the element of surprise, Detective A. Bright do not falter under unpredicted circumstances.
For a pre-emptive strike he pulls his hidden Blade under his sleeve and strikes the giant bug's antennae with true aim, trying to remove at least the one closest to him without felling prey to the creature's mandibles.

Chapter I, Verse 4

Post by Ryugin Omega on Mon Nov 19, 2018 11:01 am

Prepared and focused, Ander pulls out his arm blade and charges for the oversized bug's antennae in a attempt to critically injure his foe. [Dex(A)-1d3]vs[Dex(Ant)d14] The slow attempt of the creature to dodge is futile. Ander Bright strikes true the left antenna. The bug squirms and retreats away from its opponent to a safe distance from his weapon. Although the attack wasn´t very damaging due to the creature naturaly strong exoskeleton, the antennae seems to be a sensible stop for such insect. The Ant get now in position, preparing for Detective's next move. The true fight starts now...

Detective Ander Bright

Post by Ryugin Omega on Mon Nov 19, 2018 11:18 am

His first attack was a success. Ander knows that he could finish such creature of with his gun alone. But the road is treacherous and he might find others more deserving of eating his steel that this weak bug. To end this fight in the next blow, Ander sets himself in a defensive stance to analyse his opponent weak spot. There is no need to prolong this fight anymore than necessary.

Gathering his focus, Ander set a defensive position, baiting an attack from his opponent. The giant ant charges for immobile Ander, opening its crablike mandibles. [Dex(A)+5d2] Ander easily dodges the offensive approach of the ant-bug. [Per(A)+2d3] Now closer to the creature, Ander is able to observe 3 distinct body places were he could strike more effectively. The already damaged antennae. One more strike could detach it from the body. Its neck, an susceptible area of the exoskeleton, much like its compound eyes. Still, none of this parts of the bugs body would offer the one-hit-kill desired, but would do much more damage to the giant ant.

Detective Ander Bright

Even if he cannot kill it in one hit, he will stroke it as many as necessary. Taking advantage to his proximity to the giant and, Ander jumps to its back. While riding the ant like a bull on a square, Ander strikes its neck with his blade until it's head rolls to the ground.

Post by Ryugin Omega on Thu Nov 22, 2018 4:07 pm

[Dex(A)+3d16]vs[Dex(Ant)-3d19] Ander jumps and lands right on the creature's back. The ant struggles to free itself from Ander's grasp. Like a bull, the Giant Bug shakes its body violently. [Con(Ant)d2]:>[Con(A)-3d16] The Ant's strength seems too much for Ander to handle. He fails to hold over the beast and is thrown aside into the cold, hard ground. [Dex(A)d17] He is unable to land properly and crushes hardly into the ground of coarse-dirt (-1 Con). Now lying on his back, Ander get a new perpective of his opponent, one in which the giant-Ant seems even bigger and dangerous.
